Week one: pick the instrument before the island photograph
There are three honest products. One: a locally binding civil marriage where the law allows it. Two: a civil partnership or other local instrument that is not marriage. Three: a designed celebration after you marry or partner at home. Mix them up and you will print invitations that lie. The legal-versus-symbolic guide explains the ceremony-type fork for every couple. This page exists because LGBTQ couples cannot treat that fork as a footnote. On most islands we match, same-sex civil marriage should not be assumed. Symbolic weekends are widely hosted. If the instrument matters, complete it where the law supports it, then travel for the setting. If the instrument does not matter, say symbolic in the first planner call so nobody invoices you for a registrar you will not meet.
- Marriage, partnership instrument, or symbolic: write one
- Do not assume US-style equality on this map
- Symbolic celebration is a valid product when named early
A recognition map, not a ranking of islands
Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, the Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Antigua, Grenada and Turks and Caicos should not be briefed as same-sex civil-marriage destinations. Cayman’s civil-partnership landscape is a different recognition product and still is not a New York marriage clone—read the Cayman how-to guide and ask the registrar in the year you travel. Puerto Rico and Aruba appear in the same search boards; they are different legal markets and are not on this matching map. We will not publish a live scoreboard of laws that change. We will tell you to verify with the officer and to refuse any hotel caption that says ‘all love is welcome’ as if that were a filing. Welcome is hospitality. A certificate is the law.
- Hospitality language is not a civil instrument
- Cayman partnership is a separate row, not a slogan
- Out-of-map jurisdictions stay off this matching service
Questions that belong in the first vendor email
Will an authorised officer file a same-sex civil marriage on this island in this year? If not, will they file another instrument? If not, will the property host a symbolic ceremony without dressing it up as legal? Who will stand on the lawn if a staff member objects? Those questions are not dramatic. They are the brief. A planner who answers with a heart emoji is not ready. Independent matching exists so you are not extracting this from a Facebook group at month two. You still have to write the questions. We still will not invent coverage in a jurisdiction we do not research.
- Ask for the instrument, not for a vibe
- Ask who is physically there if someone objects
- Refuse captions that blur blessing and filing
Home-country recognition is a fourth row
Even when an island will file something, your home country may not treat that paper as marriage. UK, Irish, German, Dutch, French, US and Canadian recognition of a foreign civil partnership or marriage is a home-desk question. This site cannot certify that a Cayman instrument or a symbolic blessing will do anything at a bank or an immigration counter. If you need the paper to work at home, marry or partner at home first, then celebrate in the Caribbean. That hybrid is common and honest. It is also how you stop a hotel PDF from becoming your family-law advice.
- Island filing and home recognition are different rows
- When in doubt, complete the legal product at home
- We do not give legal advice; we give a shortlist filter
What to put in the wedding profile
The instrument sentence. The islands you will still consider for a symbolic weekend. The islands you have already ruled out. Whether parents know the product. That is enough for independent research. It is not enough for a public ranking of ‘LGBTQ-friendly planners’, which we do not publish. Start a profile when the instrument is named. You pay us; planners do not—and we will not guess the legal product from a hotel caption.
- Instrument sentence on the profile
- Ruled-out islands named so we do not re-pitch them
- No public ranking of friendly vendors
Common questions
Questions couples ask
Can we legally marry as a same-sex couple in Jamaica or Punta Cana?
Do not assume a civil same-sex marriage in Jamaica or the Dominican Republic. Symbolic celebrations are widely hosted. If you need a legally binding ceremony, complete it where the law supports it, then celebrate on the island if you still want the setting.
Is Cayman the exception?
Cayman has a civil-partnership framework that is not the same as Jamaica’s marriage-licence story and not US-style marriage equality. Read the Cayman guide and ask the registrar which instrument exists in the year you travel. Do not print a caption until that answer is written.
Is a symbolic LGBTQ wedding still a real wedding?
It is a real celebration. It is not a civil filing unless an authorised officer completes one. Both can be the product you want. The failure mode is letting a hotel call a blessing a marriage. Name the product in the invitation footnote if family will ask.
Do you publish a list of LGBTQ-friendly Caribbean planners?
No. We do not publish live planner catalogues or ranking listicles. Independent research happens offline against your instrument sentence. You pay us; planners do not.
Should we read the legal-versus-symbolic guide instead?
Read it second. That page is the generic ceremony-type fork. This page is the week-one recognition filter for couples who cannot treat same-sex status as a footnote. Use both; do not collapse them into one URL.
